Is TEREA a cigarette? No. A cigarette is lit and burns; a TEREA stick is sealed and heated by induction inside an IQOS ILUMA device. Nothing ignites, so no ash forms, no smoke plume rises, and the tar that comes from burning tobacco is not produced. What you draw is an aerosol generated from heated tobacco leaf. That mechanical difference is also why the stick is not a vape, and why the UAE treats it as a tobacco product rather than either of the two things people usually compare it to. TEREA still contains real tobacco and nicotine, which is why it is sold only to adults aged 18 and over. This guide sets out the difference in plain terms: what happens inside the stick, what “no tar” can and cannot mean, how heated tobacco differs from vaping, and what UAE rules require of you as a buyer.
What TEREA actually is
TEREA is a heated-tobacco stick made for IQOS ILUMA devices. Tobacco is packed inside a sealed wrapper along with a metal element, and the whole unit is engineered to be warmed rather than set alight. Each pack holds 20 sticks; a carton holds 10 packs, or 200 sticks. One stick is one session, and the session ends when the device decides the charge is spent. There is no relighting and no half-smoked stick to stub out.
The seal is the design decision everything else follows from. Because the wrapper is never pierced, there is no blade to push into the tobacco, no residue left in the holder and no cleaning routine between packs. The device drives a magnetic field through the wrapper, the metal element inside responds, and heat starts inside the tobacco column rather than at its surface.
In the hand, a TEREA stick is close enough to a cigarette to cause the confusion: similar length, similar diameter, held between two fingers and drawn the same way. The ranges sold in the UAE run across Regular and tobacco lines such as Yellow, Amber, Bronze, Sienna, Silver, Teak and the named Regulars, plus Menthol, Wave, Pearl, Black and Dimensions editions, produced for seven origins: Japan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Switzerland and Italy.
Why the cigarette comparison keeps coming back
Three things keep the question alive. The first is shape: a TEREA stick is a paper-wrapped tube of tobacco leaf the size of a cigarette, and no amount of technical explanation changes what your hand expects when you pick one up. The second is ritual: you open a pack, take out a stick, put it to your mouth and draw. The pause, the hand position and the social grammar are the same as smoking, which is precisely why adults who have smoked for years find the switch easy to make.
The third is nicotine. TEREA delivers nicotine from tobacco, so the effect a smoker is looking for is present. A product that looks like a cigarette, is used like a cigarette and delivers what a cigarette delivers will always invite the question, whatever the mechanism underneath. The answer is not to deny the resemblance; it is to be precise about where it stops.
The trade has a name for this middle ground: heat-not-burn. It is a category label rather than a claim, and it does the job it was invented for — it tells you that the leaf is present and the flame is not. What it does not tell you is how the product is built, which is why the compatibility rules, the pack count and the tax treatment all still need spelling out separately.
Combustion versus heating: the technical line
Burning is a chemical reaction, not simply a high temperature. When a cigarette is lit, tobacco reacts with oxygen and breaks down, releasing a plume of particles and gases — that is smoke — along with ash and carbon monoxide. The reaction is self-sustaining: once the tip is glowing, the cigarette keeps burning whether you draw or not, and the coal creeps down the paper on its own.
Heating is a different process. In an ILUMA device, a coil produces an alternating magnetic field, and the metal element sealed inside the stick converts that field into heat. Energy is generated within the tobacco rather than applied from a flame, and the tobacco is held well below the temperature at which it would burn. Nothing oxidises the way it does at the tip of a cigarette, so there is no flame front to sustain and no ember to travel.
That difference produces the list people actually notice. No burning means no ash, so there is no ashtray, no tipping and no grey dust on a car console. No burning means no smoke in the cigarette sense, so the smell that settles into curtains and coat shoulders is not there. And no burning means no combustion tar, which is the sticky residue the word refers to when it appears on a cigarette pack.
What does not change matters just as much. TEREA contains tobacco leaf, and the aerosol carries nicotine drawn out of that leaf by heat. The aerosol is visible when you exhale, especially in cool air. It is not water vapour and it is not scented air. Anyone who tells you a heated-tobacco session leaves nothing at all in a small room has not sat in one.
There is a limit to how far the comparison should be pushed, too. Heating changes the delivery mechanism, not the ingredient list. You are still inhaling an aerosol produced from tobacco, and the product is still a nicotine product for adults. The accurate framing is that a TEREA session is not a burning session — not that it is a neutral one.
Temperature is the shorthand most people reach for, and it is a fair one as long as you know what it stands for. The point is not that a lower number is automatically better; it is that below the ignition point the reaction is different. Above it, tobacco is being consumed and smoke is the result. Below it, the leaf is still leaf at the end of the session, which you can see for yourself when you lift a spent stick out of the holder: it is browned and intact, not reduced to ash.
Inside a TEREA session, step by step
The sequence is short, and each step explains a difference from smoking.
- You open a sealed pack. The sticks are not exposed to air until you break the pack open, so the tobacco holds its moisture. A pack left in a hot car will not perform like a fresh one; there is no equivalent problem with a cigarette, which is already dry by design.
- You seat the stick in the holder. It drops in until it sits flush. Nothing pierces the wrapper, and the tobacco never touches the device.
- The device detects the stick and heats it. A coil surrounds the stick and drives a magnetic field through the wrapper; the element inside turns that field into heat.
- You draw an aerosol, not smoke. Air passes through warmed tobacco and picks up flavour and nicotine. There is no combustion, so there is no smoke and no ash.
- The session ends by itself. The holder stops heating and signals with a vibration. You lift the stick out and bin it — there is nothing to stub out and nothing smouldering.
- You put the device away. No ashtray, no lighter, no cleaning stick. A dry wipe of the holder opening every so often is the whole routine.
Two details in that sequence are worth flagging. A stick that is not seated flush will not start a session at all, which is why a new user sometimes thinks the device is broken. And because the device manages the heat rather than your draw, pulling harder does not make the session stronger; it only thins the aerosol.
Does TEREA contain tar?
Tar, in the cigarette sense, is a combustion product. The word describes the sticky condensate left behind when tobacco smoke cools, which is why the figure printed on a cigarette pack is tied to how that cigarette burns. No burning, no combustion tar. In a TEREA session the tobacco is warmed rather than consumed by fire, so the residue that gives tar its name is not formed.
That statement has a boundary, and it is worth being precise about where it sits. We are not going to tell you the aerosol is tar-free in absolute terms. Heating tobacco still releases an aerosol containing particles and other substances, and no retail page can put a number on your exposure from one. The narrow, defensible claim is the one above: the tar that comes from burning tobacco is not produced, because nothing burns.
Treat “tar-free” in shop copy as shorthand rather than a specification. When a listing uses the phrase, read it as “no combustion tar”. If you want the regulatory detail for a specific product, that is a question for the manufacturer’s own disclosures, not for a page selling packs.
Why the distinction matters at the till: sellers in the grey market lean on absolutes because absolutes sell. A carton advertised as producing nothing at all is a carton you should look at twice, both for the claim and for the packaging. Genuine stock is described in plain terms by origin, pack count and price.
Heated tobacco versus vaping
A vape heats a liquid. The liquid usually contains nicotine and flavourings and no tobacco leaf; a coil warms it into an aerosol you inhale. TEREA is the other way round: real tobacco leaf, no liquid, no tank, no pod. The device heats the leaf, and the leaf is what you taste.
You feel the difference in three places. The first is flavour: a tobacco stick tastes of tobacco — toasted, woody, sometimes cocoa, tea or dried fruit — while a liquid is built from flavour compounds. The second is the ritual: a pack is opened, a stick is seated, a session runs its fixed length and ends with a vibration. Nothing is refilled or topped up. The third is the hardware: an ILUMA holder is a sealed chamber with no liquid path, so there is nothing to leak in a bag or spill on a desk.
Where the two get muddled is at the level of category. Both run on a battery, both avoid combustion, both are sold to adults only, and both meet indoor-use restrictions in the UAE. Both are nicotine products rather than medical products, and neither is a licensed stop-smoking aid. But they are not the same thing, and the till treats them differently: vaping has been legal in the UAE since April 2019 for compliant products from licensed sellers, while TEREA is excised as tobacco, at 100% excise plus 5% VAT, inside the shelf price.
| TEREA | Vape | |
|---|---|---|
| What is heated | Tobacco leaf in a sealed stick | Liquid, usually nicotine and flavourings, no leaf |
| How heat is applied | Induction from the device, element inside the stick | Coil warms liquid in a pod or tank |
| Consumable format | Pack of 20 sticks, carton of 200 | Pods, cartridges or bottles of liquid |
| Refilling | None; a spent stick is binned | Pods swapped, tanks refilled |
| Session end | Device stops and vibrates | Ends when you stop drawing |
| Combustion | None | None |
| UAE tax treatment | Excise 100% plus 5% VAT | Excise applies to e-liquid, with a minimum excise price of AED 1 per ml from 1 September 2026 |
If you are moving from a vape to TEREA, expect the tobacco taste to be the adjustment rather than the nicotine. If you are moving from cigarettes, expect the absence of smoke and ash to be the adjustment, and the ritual to feel familiar from the first pack.
What UAE law classifies it as
In the UAE, TEREA is a tobacco product. Not a cigarette, not a vape, not a consumer electronic. That classification drives three things you will meet as a buyer.
The first is age. Sale is restricted to adults aged 18 and over under Federal Law No. 15 of 2009, known as Wadeema’s Law, and every handover is ID-verified with an Emirates ID or passport. An online age gate is not a substitute for the check at the door.
The second is tax. Tobacco carries 100% excise, and VAT at 5% is applied on top. Cabinet Decision 137 of 2026 set minimum excise prices from 1 September 2026 — AED 0.40 per cigarette, AED 0.10 per gram of waterpipe tobacco and AED 1 per millilitre of e-liquid — which fixes a floor under the excised categories rather than a shelf price. The figure on a TEREA listing already contains the tax. There is no separate line at checkout and no difference between Emirates, because excise is federal.
The third is where you can use it. Tobacco-product rules apply to indoor use, and enclosed public places — malls, offices, restaurants, airport terminals, taxis — are off limits for smoking and vaping. Treat TEREA the same way. Private homes and outdoor areas are where these products are used, and a venue’s own policy settles the rest. A hotel lobby or a café terrace is not the place to test the boundary.
What this means when you buy
Device fit is absolute. TEREA works only in the IQOS ILUMA family — i ONE, i STANDARD and i PRIME — and in the TEREA-compatible Lambda i8 and i9. It does not fit blade or needle devices such as the IQOS 3 DUO or 2.4 Plus, which take HEETS. If you own an older IQOS body, TEREA is not an upgrade for it; it is a different ecosystem with a different heater.
Price is set by origin, not by category. A pack of 20 currently runs from AED 120 for Indonesian stock to AED 205 for Japanese, with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan at 125, Switzerland at 156 and Italy at 180. A carton of 200 therefore costs between AED 1,200 and AED 2,050, or roughly AED 6 to AED 10.25 a session. Those are the numbers to compare against whatever you pay for cigarettes, because they already include UAE tax.
Buy sealed and check the pack. Genuine stock arrives sealed, with a legible batch print, from a seller who names the origin on the listing. A carton that undercuts the range by a wide margin is not a bargain: excise is not optional for a legitimate importer, and a stick that has been stored badly or filled with something else will not heat properly in an induction device.
Four claims worth correcting
- “TEREA is a cigarette.” It is a tobacco stick, but nothing burns. No flame, no ash, no smoke in the cigarette sense.
- “TEREA is a vape.” There is no liquid and no tobacco-free cartridge. The stick contains leaf.
- “TEREA is tar-free.” Only in the narrow sense that combustion tar is not produced. It is not a guarantee about the aerosol.
- “TEREA is a quit aid.” It is not a licensed stop-smoking product and is not marketed as one. Nicotine is addictive.
Each correction is short, and each one changes what you should expect. A cigarette-shaped object that does not burn really is a different thing. A tobacco product that produces no smoke is still a tobacco product.
Frequently asked questions
Is TEREA a cigarette?
No. A cigarette burns, and burning is what produces smoke, ash and combustion tar. A TEREA stick is sealed and heated by induction in an ILUMA device, so the tobacco is warmed rather than consumed by fire. It contains real tobacco and nicotine and is sold as a tobacco product to adults 18 and over, but the mechanism, and therefore the session, is not a cigarette’s.
Is TEREA a vape?
No. A vape heats a liquid that usually contains nicotine and flavourings and no tobacco leaf. TEREA is the opposite: real tobacco leaf inside a sealed stick, heated by the device, with no liquid, tank or pod. Both avoid combustion and both are adult-only in the UAE, but they use different hardware, taste different and are taxed differently. If your device takes a bottle or a pod, it is not a TEREA device.
Does TEREA contain tar?
It does not produce combustion tar, because nothing burns. That is not the same as a tar-free aerosol: heating tobacco still releases an aerosol containing particles and other substances, and no retail page can quantify your exposure. The accurate statement is narrow — the tar associated with burning tobacco is not formed in an induction session, which is a different claim from a guarantee about the aerosol.
Does TEREA produce smoke and ash?
No smoke in the cigarette sense and no ash. There is no flame, no ember and nothing to tip into an ashtray, which is why a session leaves no ash residue and a much lighter smell. You will still see an aerosol when you exhale, particularly in cool air, and a room where several sessions have happened will carry a faint tobacco scent.
Who can buy TEREA in the UAE?
Adults aged 18 and over, under Federal Law No. 15 of 2009 and Wadeema’s Law. Every handover is ID-checked with an Emirates ID or passport, whether you pay cash or card. TEREA is excised as tobacco at 100% plus 5% VAT, and it falls under the same indoor-use restrictions as other tobacco products, so enclosed public places are off limits.
